Zodiac compatibility is the most popular question in astrology and its most simplified part. It compares not people but the position of the Sun at each person’s birth. Even so, it can reveal the character of a bond: different signs love, argue, handle everyday decisions and earn money together in different ways. In this guide we’ve broken down each of the 78 pairs on the same plan: love, intimacy, friendship, work, marriage, conflicts, nuances for a man and a woman, and a typical portrait of the couple.
The elements
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) burns with impulse and enthusiasm; earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) builds and protects; air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) communicates and dreams up ideas; water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feels and empathizes. Fire with air and earth with water usually understand each other easily, while fire with water and earth with air more often learn from each other through friction.
Modalities and the angles between signs
Every sign is cardinal (it starts things), fixed (it holds them steady) or mutable (it adapts and changes). Signs of the same modality but different elements sit at 90° or 180°: squares and oppositions, the most tense and the most passionate pairings. Signs of the same element form a trine (120°): easy understanding, sometimes almost too comfortable. Where do the compatibility scores come from?
They are an editorial rating based on Sun signs: the angle between the signs (trine, sextile, square, opposition and so on), the elements, the modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) and the ruling planets. The numbers are a starting point for thinking about a pair’s dynamic, not a verdict and not a calculation from your actual charts.
Which zodiac signs are the most compatible?
In classical astrology the most harmonious matches are signs of the same element: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius (fire), Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn (earth), Gemini, Libra and Aquarius (air), and Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces (water). Fire with air and earth with water also blend well. But “harder” combinations can make a strong bond too; they simply need more agreements.
If a couple has a low score, should they break up?
No. A score by signs describes tendencies: where things come easily and where you’ll have to learn to understand each other. Real relationships depend on the Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses, and just as much on maturity, values and both partners’ wish to work on the relationship.
