Mercury retrograde dates in 2027
Mercury makes three loops a year, and in 2027 they fall in February–March, June–July, and October. Below is a compact calendar; each window has its own card so it’s easy to read on a phone, too.

Shadow: September 17 – November 13. Turns retrograde October 7 at 14:40 UTC, direct October 28 at 14:10 UTC. Mercury enters Scorpio on September 27, moves back into Libra on October 16, heads into Scorpio again on November 10, and moves on into Sagittarius on November 29.
All times are in UTC. In time zones far ahead of UTC, the date of some turns shifts to the next day (for example, 19:40 UTC on July 4 is already July 5 in Sydney), but a week’s margin around a date matters more than the exact minute.
Shadows, and why signs “jump” back and forth
The shadow period is the stretch before and after the retrograde where Mercury crosses the same degrees it covers while moving backward. It passes every degree inside the zone three times: forward (pre-shadow), backward (retrograde), and forward again (post-shadow). For the February 9 – March 3 window, the pre-shadow starts on January 25, when Mercury reaches 20°55′ Aquarius, and the post-shadow ends on March 23 at 5°59′ Pisces.
In 2027 all three zones straddle a sign border. So on the calendar you’ll see a “shuttle”: Mercury enters a sign, goes back into the previous one, and some time later enters again. Keep this in mind when reading a horoscope by sign: during the retrograde dates the planet is in one sign, and in the shadow it’s in another.

- June – July. Into Cancer on May 28, back into Gemini on June 26, into Cancer again on July 12.

How each retrograde differs
The sign changes the color of a retrograde: same Mercury, different questions. Below are working themes, not a forecast of events.
February – March: Pisces and Aquarius
Water and air imagery mix here: Pisces is imagination, sensitivity, and blurred boundaries; Aquarius is ideas, communities, and technology. In this window it’s easy to drift apart on “what was meant”: you speak about feelings, the other person about facts. It’s a useful time to go back to your plans for the year, your ideas, and your digital life: clean out archives, review subscriptions and group chats, and check which “dreams” actually need concrete steps. Mercury passes through Pisces (5°59′), where thinking tends to “drift,” and returns to Aquarius, where it gathers itself into systems again.
June – July: Cancer and Gemini
Cancer speaks of home, family, and memory; Gemini of correspondence, short trips, siblings, and study. In summer this window often coincides with vacations: rebooked tickets, changed routes, and revised arrangements with loved ones show up especially clearly. It makes sense to book with flexible terms and to check the details in your confirmations. The theme of the window is “talking at home in a new way”: returning to a conversation that kept getting postponed, and hearing another version of the family story.
October: Scorpio and Libra
Libra governs partnership, fairness, and balance; Scorpio governs shared resources, trust, and what’s hidden. This window echoes the “Scorpio” theme of fall 2026 (covered in the article on Mercury retrograde in fall 2026), but the zone on the chart has shifted: in 2026 Mercury covers 5°–21° Scorpio, in 2027 from 19° Libra to 5° Scorpio. The ranges join up (4°56′ and 5°02′), so if you have a point in Libra or Scorpio, you may “meet” Mercury two years in a row. The theme stays the same: revisiting agreements, the value of deals, and reciprocity.
Compared with the 2026 retrogrades
In 2026 all three windows fell in water signs: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio. In 2027 each window “steps over” into the neighboring air sign: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra. For you, that means the retrograde shifts from “feelings and intuition” to a mix of feelings and words. The second difference is the calendar: each year the windows move roughly 17–19 days earlier, because Mercury completes its cycle relative to Earth in 116 days, and three cycles come to 348, which is less than a year.

Durations in 2026 were 22, 24, and 20 days; in 2027 they are 22, 24, and 21 days, so the windows are nearly the same.
How to plan by area of life
- Work and contracts. If possible, schedule major signings before a shadow begins or after it ends (before January 25, between March 23 and May 26, between July 19 and September 17, after November 13); if that isn’t possible, read the terms twice and get the details in writing. - Travel. For the summer and fall windows, choose tickets and lodging with flexible terms and double-check dates, times, and names.

- Study and creative work. A good time for edits and rebuilding: a manuscript, a course, a portfolio. Publish after the post-shadow.
- Money. Check your bills and subscriptions and reconcile the figures; discuss major investments and loans with a professional, since astrology is no substitute for financial advice.
How to work out the effect on your chart
General advice works for everyone, but your personal picture depends on which points of your natal chart lie in the retrograde zones. Here’s the order to follow:
- 1Take the retrograde zone
For each window, write down the range of degrees, from the direct station point to the retrograde station point. In 2027 these are 20°55′ Aquarius – 5°59′ Pisces, 27°28′ Gemini – 6°22′ Cancer, and 19°19′ Libra – 4°56′ Scorpio.
- 2Find the house
In your natal chart, see which houses these degrees fall into. The Ascendant is the start of the 1st house, and the signs follow in order; the table below gives a simplified calculation by sign.
- 3Check planets and angles
Look for natal planets, the Ascendant, and the MC within 2–3° of these degrees. A conjunction is felt most strongly; an opposition or square is weaker. Mercury crosses any planet inside the zone three times.
- 4Check the dates
The shadow is a time of preparation and “second touches,” the retrograde is review, and the post-shadow is implementation. Mark on your calendar the dates when Mercury crosses your exact degree (example below).
Example. Say you have Venus at 3° Scorpio. The October 2027 retrograde zone is 19°19′ Libra – 4°56′ Scorpio, so your Venus falls inside it. Mercury will cross 3° Scorpio three times: October 1 (forward, pre-shadow), October 13 (backward, retrograde), and November 12 (forward, post-shadow). Those are three moments when questions of relationships and values come back “onto the agenda.” If no natal points are in the zone, the retrograde feels calmer, and you sense it through the house.
To estimate the house, use the table: it counts each sign as a whole house from the Ascendant. For example, with a Taurus Ascendant, Aquarius is the 10th house and Pisces the 11th.

What else is retrograde in 2027
Venus is not retrograde in 2027. Its only retrograde in 2026–2028 runs from October 3 to November 14, 2026 (details in the article on Venus retrograde); the next begins in May 2028. Mars is retrograde from January 10 (10°26′ Virgo) to April 1 (20°56′ Leo) in 2027.
