North Node and South Node: where you come from and where you’re headed

What are the lunar nodes?

The Moon circles the Earth on an orbit tilted by about 5° to the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent yearly path across the sky. As a result, the Moon’s orbit crosses the plane of the ecliptic at two points. The one where the Moon passes from the south side to the north is called the ascending node, or North Node; the opposite point, where the Moon heads south, is the descending node, or South Node. They always sit exactly opposite each other, precisely 180° apart.

This is pure astronomy, and it has a checkable consequence: eclipses happen only near the nodes. A solar eclipse occurs when a New Moon falls close to a node (the Moon covers the Sun), and a lunar eclipse when a Full Moon falls close to one (the Moon enters Earth’s shadow). Away from the nodes the Moon passes above or below the Sun, so most lunar months have no eclipse. That is where the ancient names come from, the “Dragon’s Head and Tail,” and the Indian Rahu and Ketu: the nodes were long associated with whatever “swallows” the luminaries.

In a natal chart the nodes are not planets but mathematical points, yet very conspicuous ones: they mark the axis along which the chart is “twisted.” In astrological tradition the North Node is the direction of growth: what comes with difficulty and feels unfamiliar, but brings a sense of meaning. The South Node is what has accumulated: talents, habits and roles in which you feel at home. Together they are called the “karmic axis,” and the word “karma” should be taken carefully here; more on that at the end of the article.

Mean node vs. true node

The real Moon does not follow one perfectly steady orbit: the Sun’s gravity keeps tugging at it, and the plane of its orbit wobbles. That is why there are two ways to place a node in a chart.

• The mean node is the smoothed version: it creeps backward through the zodiac at an even pace, with no stops or reversals.
• The true (osculating) node reflects the orbit’s position at a given moment. It oscillates around the mean node by 1–2° and sometimes briefly moves forward.

In most charts the difference is a few degrees and does not change the sign. It matters only if your birthday falls a month or so before or after a sign change: then in one method the node is still in the old sign and in the other it is already in the new one. Oracul uses the mean node: it is more consistent, and its motion is easy to verify by hand. If you see a different value in another program, it most likely uses the true node; neither side is wrong, it is simply a different choice.

18.6 years: how the nodes move through the signs

What is special about the nodes is their backward, retrograde motion: they travel through the zodiac against the usual order of the signs, from Aries to Pisces, then to Aquarius and so on. A full circle takes about 18.6 years, and each sign takes about 18.6 months. So everyone born within a year and a half has the node in the same sign, and it says more about a generation than about an individual: what makes it personal is the house, the aspects and the rest of the chart.

Below is the North Node sign by birth date (the South Node is always opposite). The dates are calculated for the mean node in UTC; if you were born on or near a sign-change day, rely on the calculator and your birth time.

The row for today is Aquarius / Leo from August 18, 2026 to March 7, 2028. The node enters Aquarius at its last degree and moves toward zero: from ingress to exit it crosses the whole sign. We cover the whole 2027 axis, Aquarius and Leo, in “Astrology forecast 2027”: for example, the eclipses of February 6 (annular solar, 17°38′ Aquarius) and August 2, 2027 (total solar, 9°55′ Leo) lie near this axis, because eclipses and nodes are inseparable. The node does not change sign in 2027: that happens on March 7, 2028, when it moves into Capricorn. The eclipse calendar is in the Calendar section.

How to find your node

The easiest way is the calculator: the North Node sign is calculated from your birth date alone.

Want to check the calculation yourself? The mean node formula (in degrees of ecliptic longitude) is Ω = 125.0445 − 1934.1363 · T, where T is the number of Julian centuries since January 1, 2000, 12:00 (the full formula has a tiny correction of a few thousandths of a degree, which you can ignore for the sign). Example for August 14, 1996, 12:00 UT: Julian date 2,450,310.0, T = (2,450,310 − 2,451,545) / 36,525 = −0.033812. Then Ω = 125.0445 + 1934.1363 · 0.033812 = 190.44°. Signs run in 30° steps, and Libra spans 180° to 210°, so the node sits at 10°26′ Libra and the South Node at 10°26′ Aries. This is exactly how the calculator above works out the node.

North Node in the 12 signs

Read the pair as a whole: first the South Node, the familiar way of doing things, then the North Node, a step toward growth. This is not “bad → good”: each pole has its strengths, and growth means adding the missing one without giving up your own.

North Node in Aries · South Node in Libra

The habit is to adapt, weigh other people’s expectations and put your own “I want” on hold until everyone agrees. Growth lies in direct action: starting before everything is clear, saying what you want out loud and tolerating someone else’s displeasure. The overshoot is bluntness, forgetting about others. A useful marker: a decision made on your own, but with respect.

North Node in Taurus · South Node in Scorpio

Living at the edge is familiar: crises, intense emotions, other people’s secrets and shared resources. Growth lies in simplicity and stability: a steady income, the body, and possessions and habits that work for years. The lesson is that calm is a skill, not boredom. Practice: routine, savings, craft, whatever grows slowly.

North Node in Gemini · South Node in Sagittarius

The habit is to know the answer, preach and hold on to convictions. Growth lies in curiosity: asking questions, listening to different versions, learning in short steps and admitting “I don’t know.” Correspondence, reading and conversations with neighbors and relatives all work well. Check yourself: are you sharing an opinion or finding out someone else’s?

North Node in Cancer · South Node in Capricorn

Keeping a brave face, staying in control and measuring yourself by achievements and status is familiar ground. Growth lies in care and vulnerability: home, family, honest feelings and the right to ask for and accept help. The danger is hiding in the family from the outside world. Look for balance: warmth does not cancel your goals, it feeds them.

North Node in Leo · South Node in Aquarius

The habit is to dissolve into a group, ideas and the role of observer, staying “like everyone else.” Growth lies in personal self-expression: creativity, play, romance, the right to be noticed and to receive recognition. What matters is not to reduce that brightness to a wish for applause. Ask yourself: what would you do if nobody were judging you?

North Node in Virgo · South Node in Pisces

Going with the flow, hoping it will “sort itself out” and dissolving into other people’s troubles and fantasies is familiar. Growth lies in practicality: a plan, a task, a skill, order, looking after your well-being (without replacing a doctor) and being able to say “that’s not my job.” Remember, the goal is not pedantry but a foundation that holds up your sensitivity.

North Node in Libra · South Node in Aries

The habit is to rely only on yourself, win the argument and decide alone. Growth lies in partnership: listening, reaching agreement, asking “how do you see it?” and choosing a union where you do not carry everything yourself. Dialogue works better than a sprint. The red line: compromising does not mean giving up your boundaries.

North Node in Scorpio · South Node in Taurus

Holding on to comfort, possessions and “let everything stay as it is” is familiar. Growth lies in depth: trust, intimacy, shared resources, the ability to let go of what has run its course and to go through change. Scorpio asks for honesty with yourself, not drama. Practice: notice what you cling to only out of fear of losing it.

North Node in Sagittarius · South Node in Gemini

The habit is to gather information, discuss everything and dart between options. Growth lies in meaning: taking a position, building a picture of the world, studying more broadly, traveling and taking responsibility for your beliefs. Ask “what for?” after every “what?” Sagittarius demands not only ideas but actions.

North Node in Capricorn · South Node in Cancer

The cozy, family-centered and emotionally dependent is familiar: you want someone to take care of you. Growth lies in responsibility for the work: a goal, structure, a profession, the role of a grown-up others can rely on. The warmth stays but stops being a refuge from tasks. Long projects and commitments to yourself help a lot.

North Node in Aquarius · South Node in Leo

The habit is to be at the center, seek recognition and play out the drama. Growth lies in belonging to a community: friendship among equals, shared ideas, the right to be different, a contribution to the future rather than to a personal image. Other people’s successes stop feeling like competition. This is exactly the task the generation with the node in Aquarius is working through now, from 2026 to 2028.

North Node in Pisces · South Node in Virgo

Analyzing, criticizing and controlling details is familiar: “I’ll figure it out first, then feel it.” Growth lies in trusting intuition, in compassion, creativity and rest, and in being willing to accept imperfection. There is no need to abandon order: it remains an ally, not the boss. A pause, music and quiet contemplation all help.

Nodes by house

The sign tells you how the node shows up, and the house tells you where. The North Node’s house is the area where growth comes through experience; the South Node’s house is familiar territory. Houses are counted from the Ascendant and require a birth time. More on each area in “Houses in astrology”; here is a short cheat sheet for the North Node:

• 1st house: learn to rely on yourself and put yourself forward.
• 2nd house: build your own income and value what you have.
• 3rd house: learn, speak up and build connections with your surroundings.
• 4th house: create a home and an inner foundation, and work with family and roots.
• 5th house: create, play and risk your heart.
• 6th house: build a daily rhythm, a craft and self-care.
• 7th house: work in partnership and learn close relationships.
• 8th house: trust, share resources and go through change.
• 9th house: seek meaning, study and step outside your usual circle.
• 10th house: take responsibility for your path, goals and reputation.
• 11th house: find your people and invest in the shared.
• 12th house: listen to intuition, rest and let go of control.

The South Node sits in the opposite house: if the North Node is in the 7th, the South Node is in the 1st, and the familiar “I’ll do it myself” mode sits alongside the task of “we.”

Aspects to the nodes and the nodal return

A node is strengthened when a planet sits near it. The most noticeable is the conjunction: a planet within a few degrees of the node. Next to the North Node it points to a tool for growth, and next to the South Node to a “specialty” that has always bailed you out and is therefore hard to let go of. Other aspects read more softly: a trine and sextile show support, and a square shows friction, which is what growth is made of. We have a separate article on the aspects themselves and their orbs. The nodal return happens when the transiting node returns to its natal position: every 18.6 years, that is, at about ages 18–19, 37, 56 and 74. For example, for someone born on August 14, 1996, the first return falls at the end of March 2015 (age 18.6). Between returns there are “half-returns” at about 9, 28 and 47, when the node sits on the opposite point. Astrologers treat these ages as a reason to reconsider direction: study and moves at 18–19, a career change at 37. This is an observation of tradition, not a law, and what happens in those years depends on you. The Saturn return at around 29–30 has the same logic (by our calculation Saturn’s period is 29.46 years): Saturn describes what your adult life stands on and tests it for strength. Karma without the mysticism

The word “karma” carries a lot of fear: it can seem that the nodes are a debt from past lives. Oracul takes a different approach. There is neither proof of past lives nor an astronomical argument for “karma” in the nodes, and we make no such claims. The metaphor does work, though: the South Node is habit (what you do without thinking) and the North Node is growth (what you could learn). Test it on yourself: do you recognize recurring patterns? What changes if you take a step toward the North Node?

What not to do with the nodes

• Treat the South Node as “bad.” It is your reserve of strength. Growth is not giving it up.
• Read a node as fate. The axis describes a direction, not a guarantee: one and the same node can play out in many life stories.
• Look only at the sign. Without the house, aspects and Saturn the picture is incomplete, and the sign is shared by a whole generation.
• Confuse the nodes with a forecast. A forecast needs transits, not the axis itself.
