Personal year number: how to calculate it and what it means

What is the personal year number?

The personal year number is a numerology indicator that describes the main theme of the current year for a specific person. Different sources call it the “personal year” or the “year number.” The idea is simple: the same calendar year is “colored” differently for different people, and your date of birth sets the color.

In Oracul this is an arcanum from 1 to 22, the same scale as in the destiny matrix, where 22 is The Fool. Each number has its own theme. It’s a guiding theme, not a prediction: it helps you choose what to emphasize in your plans and what not to drag into this year.

How to calculate your personal year number, step by step

The formula: r(day + month + digit sum of the year). The example is a person born on 14.08.1996.

1. 1
   Birth day and month

   Take the day and month as numbers, not as separate digits. For August 14: 14 + 8 = 22.

2. 2
   Digit sum of the year in question

   The year is the calendar year, January 1 to December 31. For 2026: 2+0+2+6 = 10. For 2027: 2+0+2+7 = 11. Your birth year is not part of the calculation.

3. 3
   Add it all together

   For 2026: 22 + 10 = 32. For 2027: 22 + 11 = 33.

4. 4
   Reduce to the 1–22 scale

   While the number is above 22, add its digits (22 stays 22). 32 → 3+2 = 5; 33 → 3+3 = 6. That is your year number: 5 (The Hierophant) for 2026 and 6 (The Lovers) for 2027.

The birth year (1996) isn’t used in the calculation; only the calendar year you’re calculating for changes. That’s why the personal year number changes every year, while the life path number from your date of birth stays the same for life (more about the life path number).

Examples for 2026 and 2027

Five real birth dates calculated with the same formula. Note that the number for neighboring years usually differs by one, and sometimes the result fits the scale right away without any reduction.

• 14.08.1996 — 2026: 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+6) = 32 → 5, year number 5 (The Hierophant); 2027: 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+7) = 33 → 6, year number 6 (The Lovers).
• 03.05.1990 — 2026: 3 + 5 + (2+0+2+6) = 18, year number 18 (The Moon); 2027: 3 + 5 + (2+0+2+7) = 19, year number 19 (The Sun).
• 29.11.2001 — 2026: 29 + 11 + (2+0+2+6) = 50 → 5, year number 5 (The Hierophant); 2027: 29 + 11 + (2+0+2+7) = 51 → 6, year number 6 (The Lovers).
• 07.03.1985 — 2026: 7 + 3 + (2+0+2+6) = 20, year number 20 (Judgement); 2027: 7 + 3 + (2+0+2+7) = 21, year number 21 (The World).
• 05.06.1988 — 2026: 5 + 6 + (2+0+2+6) = 21, year number 21 (The World); 2027: 5 + 6 + (2+0+2+7) = 22, year number 22 (The Fool).

What the examples show. The dates 14.08.1996 and 29.11.2001 give the same arcanum (5) in 2026, even though their sums differ: 32 and 50. The date 03.05.1990 needs no reduction: 18 is already within the scale. And 05.06.1988 in 2027 gives exactly 22: 5 + 6 + 11 = 22, and it stays 22 (The Fool) instead of turning into 4.

The classic 1–9 count and how it relates to the arcanum

In traditional numerology the personal year is added up the same way (day + month + digit sum of the year), but the result is reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. For 14.08.1996 in 2026 you get 32 → 5. This scale is coarser: nine themes instead of twenty-two.

The link is simple: the classic digit is the digit sum of the arcanum number, repeated until one digit remains where needed. For example, 5 (The Hierophant) stays 5; 14 (Temperance) reduces to 1+4 = 5; 22 (The Fool) reduces to 2+2 = 4. So all the arcana in one “column” correspond to one classic digit:

• Classic 1 — arcana 1, 10, 19.
• Classic 2 — arcana 2, 11, 20.
• Classic 3 — arcana 3, 12, 21.
• Classic 4 — arcana 4, 13, 22.
• Classic 5 — arcana 5, 14.
• Classic 6 — arcana 6, 15.
• Classic 7 — arcana 7, 16.
• Classic 8 — arcana 8, 17.
• Classic 9 — arcana 9, 18.

This means Oracul’s year number isn’t a separate method “against” the classic one but a refinement of it: one digit unfolds into two or three themes. For example, a classic five can be The Hierophant (study, a mentor) or Temperance (balance, patience).

The nine-year cycle: the traditional view

In classic numerology, personal years form a cycle of nine years: 1 is a beginning, 2 is partnership and waiting, 3 is expression, 4 is foundation, 5 is change, 6 is care, 7 is analysis, 8 is results, 9 is completion. After the ninth year a new cycle begins. How useful this picture is comes down to whether it works as a metaphor: there is no scientific evidence for it.

The classic digit rises by exactly one each year, and after nine it goes back to one. Let’s see what Oracul’s arcanum does meanwhile for a person born on 14.08:

• 2026 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+6) = 32 → 5: 5 (The Hierophant).
• 2027 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+7) = 33 → 6: 6 (The Lovers).
• 2028 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+8) = 34 → 7: 7 (The Chariot).
• 2029 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+2+9) = 35 → 8: 8 (Strength).
• 2030 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+3+0) = 27 → 9: 9 (The Hermit).
• 2031 — 14 + 8 + (2+0+3+1) = 28 → 10: 10 (Wheel of Fortune).

As long as the sum doesn’t exceed 22, the arcanum also rises by one a year. When the sum “jumps” over 22, its digits are added and the arcanum steps back: a sum of 22 gives The Fool, while a sum of 23 already gives 5. That’s why the arcanum has no strict nine-year cycle, but it does have the “columns” from the table above: the classic digit always goes round in a circle, while the arcanum within its column can vary.

The 22 year numbers and their themes

The heading of each item is the theme the app shows; the expanded text follows. Read it as a hint for your plans, not as a prediction.

• 1 · I — The Magician. A year of new beginnings and your own initiative. An idea is asking to become real: you have more resources at hand than it seems. A good fit for launching a project, changing careers or taking a first step. Keep your focus on one undertaking: this year rewards choosing better than scattering.
• 2 · II — The High Priestess. A year of intuition, stillness and inner answers. A year of quiet and inner work: answers come not from noise but from observation. It’s a good time to keep a journal, listen to your intuition and study what has long interested you. Don’t rush into loud moves: ripening is a result too.
• 3 · III — The Empress. A year of growth, abundance and caring for yourself. A year of growth and care for yourself, your home, your creative work and the people close to you. Projects where you have to nurture something living, from a family to a business, fit well. Make sure generosity toward others doesn’t crowd out caring for yourself.
• 4 · IV — The Emperor. A year of structure, order and responsibility. A time to build a foundation: getting your affairs, paperwork, finances and routine in order. Agreements and regularity work in your favor. Be careful with rigidity: a plan is a frame, not a cage.
• 5 · V — The Hierophant. A year of learning, mentors and tradition. A year when it’s easy to choose a course, a school, a teacher or a tradition and follow it systematically. Sharing your own experience helps too. Don’t try to master everything at once: depth is worth more than breadth.
• 6 · VI — The Lovers. A year of choosing with the heart and of important relationships. Important decisions are made with the heart and with your values. A good time to talk about what matters most with the people close to you and to decide what is truly important to you. Every choice is also a refusal of something else: acknowledge its cost honestly.
• 7 · VII — The Chariot. A year of movement and bold decisions. Trips, a change of role, bold decisions and the energy to go after your goal. It’s important to hold your course, or your strength will scatter in different directions. Speed doesn’t cancel checking your bearings: review your direction at least once a quarter.
• 8 · VIII — Strength. A year of strength, gentle authority and endurance. You get through things not by pressure but by patience and calm. A good year to work with emotions, habits and boundaries. Don’t confuse strength with suppressing yourself: accepting a feeling is work too.
• 9 · IX — The Hermit. A year of solitude, experience and wisdom. It helps to slow down, take stock and choose what to keep in your life. Study, research and mentoring go well. Don’t isolate yourself completely: talking with someone you trust is part of the search.
• 10 · X — Wheel of Fortune. A year of change and lucky turns. Much changes without your plan, and the main skill of the year is flexibility. Notice opportunities that appear unexpectedly, but don’t build everything on luck at once. Hold on to what depends on you.
• 11 · XI — Justice. A year of honesty, balance and consequences. It becomes clear how decisions connect to consequences. A good time to put agreements, commitments and the balance of give and take in order. Don’t judge yourself or others harshly: the goal is clarity.
• 12 · XII — The Hanged Man. A year of pause and a fresh look at the old. Not everything has to be decided now: sometimes it helps to stop and look at the old in a new way. A good fit for revisiting goals and habits. A pause is not inaction if you use it to ask yourself a question.
• 13 · XIII — Death. A year of endings and renewal. Time to close what has run its course: projects, roles, familiar patterns. The space this frees up lets you begin something new. “Death” here is a metaphor for change, not a literal event.
• 14 · XIV — Temperance. A year of balance, patience and healing. A year of balance and recovery: patience, routine, and joining different sides of life together. A good time to build a rhythm between work and rest. Don’t expect quick results; for questions about your health, see a doctor, not a number.
• 15 · XV — The Devil. A year of temptation, ambition and personal power. Attachments, money, desires and ambitions come into view. A good time to admit honestly what you’re “attached” to and what you really want. Ambition works until it turns into dependence on the result.
• 16 · XVI — The Tower. A year of rebuilding and release. What rested on false foundations may shake, and you get a chance to break free. Keep a cushion of time and something to lean on, and don’t put off clear conversations. It’s not an omen of trouble but a metaphor for rebuilding.
• 17 · XVII — The Star. A year of hope, inspiration and dreams. Strength returns, and ideas and bearings for the future appear. A good time to launch creative and long-term projects. Dreams need steps: write down at least one and give it a deadline.
• 18 · XVIII — The Moon. A year of intuition, dreams and hidden fears. What used to stay in the shadows comes to the surface: dreams, worries, intuition. It helps to write down dreams, work through anxieties and avoid hasty decisions based on incomplete information. If anxiety gets in the way of living, reach out to a professional.
• 19 · XIX — The Sun. A year of joy, success and clarity. What you’ve been doing becomes visible. A good time to put yourself out there, rest and share a result. Don’t forget the people next to you: joy is better in company.
• 20 · XX — Judgement. A year of awakening and ties to your roots. The past, family stories and your calling are reviewed. A good time to take stock and to take the step you’ve been postponing. Don’t blame yourself for the past: the aim is to understand, not to judge.
• 21 · XXI — The World. A year of completed cycles and new horizons. What you’ve been working on for a long time comes together as a complete result. A launch, a defense, a move or recognition fit well. Leave room for the next cycle: completion is not a finish line but a joint.
• 22 · XXII — The Fool. A year of freedom, lightness and spontaneity. Spontaneity, a break from the familiar, readiness for something new. A good time to experiment, travel and try things. Freedom doesn’t cancel responsibility: lightness holds up only if you still watch where you step.

How to use your year number in planning

• State the theme in one sentence. For 5, for example: “choose one teacher and stay with them.” The sentence should answer the question “what matters most to me this year?”
• Spread the theme across the quarters. Three or four steps for the year, one per quarter: launch, deepening, review, wrap-up. Oracul doesn’t calculate month numbers, so a quarterly grid is your own tool.

The year 2027: what eleven has to do with it

The digit sum of 2027 is 2+0+2+7 = 11, a master number. Sometimes the “year number” means the digit sum of the calendar year for everyone at once; for the numerological meaning of 2027, see the article on 2027 numerology. For your personal year, this eleven is just an addend: 11 is added to your birth day and month. That’s why the “world number” and your personal year number aren’t the same thing: a person born on 14.08 gets 6 in 2027, not 11.

Common mistakes

• Using the birth year. The personal year uses the year you’re calculating for, not your birth year.
• Reducing to a single digit. If you want the Oracul number, don’t reduce until the result exceeds 22.
• Turning 22 into 4. In Oracul, 22 stays 22 (The Fool); in the classic count, 22 reduces to 4.
• Counting years “from the birthday.” Oracul counts by calendar year; other sources may count the year differently.
• Mixing up day and month. Both are added in the formula, so the order doesn’t matter, but a wrong day or month gives a different result.
• Waiting for events. The year number describes a theme, not “what will happen.” The decisions stay with you.
