What is a yearly tarot spread?
A yearly spread is thirteen cards: twelve for the months of the year and one main card that sets the theme of the whole year. The reading in Oracul doesn’t predict events. It turns the cards into a calm calendar for reflection: where you may have the wind at your back, where it’s worth conserving your energy, and what to lean on.

The deck we use is Rider–Waite–Smith: it was published in 1909, the illustrations were drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, and the concept came from A. E. Waite. Of its 78 cards, 22 are the Major Arcana and the rest are the Minor Arcana.
How the cards are drawn: it isn’t a calculation from your birth date
It’s easy to get this wrong, so let’s be plain: the cards of the year and of the months are chosen at random, not calculated from your date of birth. A computer generator shuffles the deck and draws thirteen different cards: twelve for the months and one for the year. Then the cards are locked in, and only after that is the text written.
A few consequences follow:
- A Major Arcana card comes up as the card of the year in about 28 cases out of 100 (22 cards out of 78), and among thirteen cards you’ll meet three or four Major Arcana on average. If you got a “quiet” card, that is an ordinary spread too.
- About a quarter of the cards land reversed. Statistically that’s three months out of twelve; in the reading this is a softened or inward-turned interpretation, not a “bad” card.
- You can’t redraw. The cards come up once and the spread stays the same. That way you can use it as an honest card for the whole year instead of picking a pleasant version for yourself.
This is also how it differs from the personal year number. The year arcanum from your birth date is calculated by a formula: for August 14, the day, month and digit sum of the year give 14 + 8 + 11 = 33, that is 3 + 3 = 6, The Lovers for 2027. That is the same answer for everyone born on that day. The spread is something else: thirteen random cards that don’t depend on your date. They’re handy to read together, as two different hints. The reading consists of a card of the year, twelve months, quarter summaries and advice for the year. The example below is a made-up spread “starting January 2027”: its cards were picked for illustration.

Before you open the reading, you already see the card of the year with its interpretation and the twelve monthly cards. The month texts, the quarters and the advice stay locked. Once you open the reading, every month arrives in the same format so it’s easy to read at the start of the month:
- Title and meaning of the card in this month and in the context of the whole year: two or three sentences.
- Opportunity — what deserves your attention.
- Caution — what you shouldn’t lose sight of.
- Tip — one practical step.
An excerpt from the reading
The Star opens the year without pressure: after a difficult stretch, you’ll have strength not for a sprint but for recovery. Whatever you begin quietly and without hurry will grow slowly but surely.
Lean on small, regular steps rather than one big leap. What’s worth letting go of is the habit of waiting for the “perfect moment”: the card says that faith in yourself returns through action.

How to use the spread through the year
- Read each month at its start. At the end of the month, check in: what from the description did you recognize, and what didn’t you? That way you’ll see for yourself whether this language works for you.
- See the card of the year as a backdrop. It sets the mood, and the card of the month adds a shade on top of it.
- Don’t turn a card into a verdict. The Tower in July doesn’t mean disaster, and the Ten of Pentacles doesn’t guarantee money. An interpretation is a prompt to make a choice, not a substitute for one.
- Don’t look in the text for a health or income forecast. The reading gives no medical, legal or financial advice.

Questions about the reading
How are the year card and the monthly cards chosen?
A random number generator draws them from a shuffled 78-card Rider–Waite deck: thirteen different cards, one of which becomes the card of the year. Your date of birth doesn’t affect which cards are drawn; the model interprets the cards that came up.
Can I redraw the cards if I don’t like the spread?
No: the cards are drawn once, and the spread stays the same all year. The same request (same starting month, person and focus) opens the spread that was already drawn, not a new one.
How detailed is each month of the yearly tarot reading?
Each month has a title, the meaning of the card in the context of the whole year, plus an opportunity, a caution and a practical tip, one sentence each. You also get summaries of the four quarters and advice for the whole year.
Is a year arcanum from my birth date the same as a tarot spread for the year?
No. The year arcanum is a numerology calculation from your birth date, and you can work it out on the site for free. The yearly spread is thirteen randomly drawn cards. One doesn’t replace the other, and you can read them together.
